The REALTOR® Party Political Survival Initiative: Let Us Hear From You

Important Information for NAR Members About Our Political Survival

In March 2011, NAR launched the REALTOR® Party Political Survival Initiative. The initiative is a bold and powerful proposal to make the Voice of Real Estate one of the most influential advocacy groups in America.

There are monumental issues we're facing — in Congress, in the regulatory agencies here in Washington that govern mortgage financing, in your statehouse that’s faced with critical budget crises and declining property tax revenues, and in our municipalities and counties. Each of these issues impact our ability to do business and serve clients. We must act as one to ensure the future of mortgage financing and to keep housing affordable in America. We must have the power to shape this pivotal moment for the American Dream of Home Ownership everywhere and at every level of government.

To fund such a nationwide effort, the REALTOR® Party Political Survival Initiative proposes a dedicated dues increase of $40. Because it is "dedicated" to this initiative, the dues increase would be used exclusively to fund political advocacy efforts. Nearly 70 percent of this money is earmarked for state and local issues. If it is approved, over 50 percent of the NAR budget would be devoted to political advocacy, which consistently ranks among members as the number-one benefit they receive from NAR.

The proposal will be voted on by the NAR Board of Directors at the Midyear Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo in May.

Read the article from Politico that discusses the emerging clout of the REALTOR® Party and how "REALTORS® ... are going to want to be politically effective, and a large measure of their influence is that they are present everywhere."

Due to that bone head move you made in the congressional election openly supporting Adler, I am very reluctant to participate any further in RPAC. this is the first year since it's inception that I haven't participated.

NAR is getting worse than the labor unions. Forced contributions to PAC's is not the way to go. If the idea is so good, than people will contribute voluntarily. I'm dead set against mandating contributions. Money corrupts!

This is not a time to be raising dues! With the market and economy the way it is, you'll only be driving more people out of the business.

I fully support the RPPSI! We must counter the big banks!

This should be approved ONLY if coupled to termination of the Local Boards. With today's regionalization of markets and multiple listing services, local Boards have become obsolete, and their few remaining functions can be absorbed into state organizations. Just like our governmental offices, we must follow the path of consolidation and slimmimng down to remain relevant and effective in the future.

Okay NAR, how come the messages from April 18-19 that STRONGLY OPPOSE this ridiculous proposal have suddenly disappeared? Comments have been posted on here everyday for weeks now they suddenly end on 4/17. Poof, they're gone!

We do not need to raise our dues. They are high enough. The money (too much) that we did spent was waisted. Look what we got Obama what a joke.

As a State President I am appalled at the amount of members that DO NOT have a clue what this initiative is all about. Each state president and AE have been given the task of informing members of why the time is now to step to the plate and raise the dues $40.00. I am also happy to inform NAR with a thumbs up our state is unanimously 100% with NAR and the increase of $40 for the initiative. Our members umderstand the importance of staying in business. They will also give to RPAC for the investment to the candidates. I find it amazing as a state president that you members that are compaining can not umderstand the process. The leadership team of NAR has never chosen the candidate to support. The NAR RPAC trustees, who by the way, are represented from each region, make the endorsements for NAR. This has nothing to do with this initiative. The initiative will have to do with independent expenditures,IMF and with that said, the local trustees, the state trustees MAY request from NAR for additinal funds because of this initiative. Members,I am serious, with RPAC funds only 30% of the members give their fair share goal of $15.00. The rest of you, who are I am sure, doing the majority of the complaining, have not given one dime, to help insure our industry stays strong. I have requested a donor list from NAR so we can compare with all the negatives out there where there name is with investment to our profession. Times are tuff but they will be alot tougher if we do not get this to pass. When the banks step in with their lobbying efforts and all the others that want a piece of us, then my friends you can complain and whine because you will not have a industry to be in. Please let's wake up and support this $40. Montana is proud to support and we will help NAR and the rest of the majority of REALTORS that know and understand this is a business decision. I agree with, "IF REAL ESTATE IS YOUR PROFESSION, THEN POLITICS IS YOUR BUSINESS!" PLEASE just understand the importance of what is happening today, more so tomorrow and definately in the near future. Congratulations NAR on a project that DOES make the majority of REALTORS proud to be a member of the BEST ASSOCIATION we can belong to! Ronda Tompers MAR PRESIDENT

What is wrong with you people. You are not understanding what the whole initiative is about. The process is simple but if you havent been involved in local, state or national then of course you can listen to the others that don't understand either. I only wish all you negative I can't afford $40 the economy doesn't warrant $40 would just leave our association. This is about our clients and the members who believe. You have been hitch hiking long enough. You pay your $80 and NEVER give one dime to RPAC to protect the rights of property owners and our members. I want NAR to publish every persons name that has made their fair share investment in RPAC and I will guarantee that ALL you don't raise the dues have NEVER invested one dime in RPAC. Shame on you...now is the time to put forth the $40 or shut up and leave our industry. We do not need you nor do we want you. Enough is enough. The whining is getting really old real quick! I do endorse the $40 and only wish they would have made it more than we would have a better and stronger industry!

I do not feel this increase is necessary especially with most of our incomes declining.

I am 100% against ANY part of my dues going to fund political advocacy. A) we members do not all have the money and are just getting by now B) you will no doubt support candidates that I and other paying members oppose on other issues and it is wrong to force us to contribute money for people we are against C) you will support candidates you THINK will help us but they either have no intention to or no ability to D) the government meddling in the free market exacerbated the mortgage mess if not caused it entirely now you think they can fix it? If you would lobby to stop all government involvement in the free markets I might support that (even ending the mortgage deduction...it is time for the government to cut its spending and get 100% out of the private business of the people buying or not buying real estate).

In this economy now is not the time to raise our dues. I am opposed to any fees being increased for any reason at all! The NAR needs to rethink this action.

Interesting to see that the NAR Executive Committee shot down Proposal #2 and approved the $40 dues increase before the Town Hall Variety Show even took place. Why then, did they even mention Proposal #2? http://www.realtor.org/topics/political_survival_initiative/bod_letter_041211

I usually am quiet on this stuff but it's been brought to my attention by our State President. When she talked of the ignorance of members I thought she was kidding but I was proven wrong. This has been explained to our association and very great information was given. I feel this is an excellent opportunity for us to go on and receive all the help we can get to go on with our great industry. Yes it is $40 but a very good $40 well invested in this action by NAR. A big thanks should be given not the baloney that is being said. Thanks and I look forward to the good of my industry!

For all you stupid members that are afraid of $40 get a life! Call your trustee that represents your state and tell them where you want your funds to go to! It's not NAR LEADERSHIP that makes the decisions you idiots! That's why we are a member driven association. Get involved, get a life and understand the initiative before you whine anymore! Some of these negative commemts would be good in a comic book and thats where they belong right along with the member that said it! It's our business people!!!! It's real...it's here and it's here now! VOTE..ACT..be involved...

To be quite frank I was not in favor of this until I read and did my research. I am now a member in favor of this increase and I will still also make my RPAC investment. If members would read and study how could you not endorse this? NAR I say thanks and count me in for the support of the increase!

I am as mad as Hell that any member would be having a fit about the $40 increase. They have got to be nuts! To protect me and my clients is a small increase to pay! Bring it on and lets roll down the track! I AM IN FAVOR OF $40.00 AND MORE IF NEEDED!

Count me in as approving and voting for this $40 increase in my dues. I list and sell homes and I would only hope that NAR would be looking out for the best of my business. For all those that want to complain...good bye!
