The REALTOR Party: Elections 2010
The REALTOR® Party had a big impact on the 2010 midterm elections!
REALTORS® VOTED for our REALTOR® Party Champions, who have a history of supporting real estate issues in Washington. When some of our REALTOR® Party Champions faced difficult re-election campaigns this year, NAR launched Independent Expenditure (IE) campaigns, which identify voters who would be receptive to the candidate and then communicates with these voters, all of whom are outside the REALTOR® family. Of the 11 IE campaigns — the most in NAR history — eight of our champions prevailed. It is important to note that in keeping with federal election law, these campaigns are planned and implemented without any interaction between NAR and a candidate's campaign.
Also during the 2010 election cycle, NAR conducted 12 Opportunity Races in the primaries and 91 in the general election for a total of 103 races. The Opportunity Race Program is a grassroots-based initiative designed to encourage REALTORS® to become involved in all aspects of the campaigns of REALTOR® Party Champions. REALTORS® are contacted by NAR through direct mail, phone banks, email and social media and encouraged to support a particular candidate for Congress in their state or district. By keeping the communications limited to REALTORS®, NAR is able to provide an extra step beyond the financial contributions of the REALTORS® Political Action Committee, which are capped by the federal government at $10,000.
